On Mount Soledad, you’ll stand underneath the 43 foot high cross at an altitude of over 800 feet above sea level while enjoying the splendid views that the mount provides. La Jolla Shores Beach
La Jolla Shores is located at 8200 Camino del Oro and is a flat, sandy beach about a mile long adjacent, to a residential area. Hotels and a commercial area with restaurants and shops starts at the south end of the beach at Avenida de la Playa heading east (away from the water). In the summer months, the waves at La Jolla Shores beach are normally the most gentle of all San Diego beaches. Please be advised that the rip currents can be very strong at times.
This is the main reason why novice scuba diver classes are held at La Jolla Shores. The grassy Kellogg Park is located right behind the main lifeguard station and is an excellent area for picnics. Between the beach sand and the park there is a wide cement boardwalk which runs parallel to the beach.

Ecological Reserve. Please be advised that the removal of all marine life from this area as well as fishing is strictly prohibited by law. The landmark Scripps Pier (not open to the public) lies at the north end of the beach also known as Scripps for the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. This part of the beach is favored by intermediate surfers and body boarders.
La Jolla Shores has the only beachfront boat launch within the San Diego City limits which is just south of the lifeguard station. Small pleasure boats, fishing vessels and kayaks can be launched straight into the surf at foot of Avenida de la Playa. You may need to have four wheel drive vehicle because this can be a rough terrain area.
There are specified areas on the beach where the waves tend to be small. This is the reason why the south end of the beach is widely used by scuba diving classes. If you like to surf, the north end of the beach by the Scripps Pier will be better suited for you.
La Jolla Shores tends to get very crowded during the summer months because it is a very popular San Diego family beach. You should try to get there in the morning, as the crowds aren't as bad.
